SmartReply — AI reply keyboard for iOS
Last updated: October 18, 2026
In short: what you type stays on your device by default. Text leaves your device only when you tap AI reply or analyze a screenshot, and then it is used solely to generate suggestions. Screenshots are read on your device first; if you tap analyze a screenshot, only the text recognised from it on your device is sent — the image itself never leaves your iPhone. (The Android app has no on-device text recognition, so there a screenshot you choose to analyse is sent to our server to be read.) There are no ads, no tracking and no analytics.
1. Information processed on your device
- Everything you type with the SmartReply keyboard, and anything you copy, is processed on your device.
- If you use iOS dictation, the audio is handled by iOS. SmartReply has no microphone access and never records audio.
- On iOS, screenshots and photos you choose to analyze are read on your device using Apple's Vision framework; only the text recognised from them is sent to our proxy (see section 2), and the image itself stays on your device. The Android app has no on-device text recognition, so a screenshot you choose to analyse there is downscaled and sent to our proxy to be read.
- Your settings, your daily usage counters (AI replies and image scans), and the quick-reply shortcuts are stored in a private container on your device, shared only between the app and its keyboard extension. None of it is uploaded.
- The three quick-reply keys above the keyboard learn from the short replies you actually send (24 characters or fewer). That is a word count kept on your device only — not a log of what you type, and nothing you write without sending it is ever recorded. You can clear it at any time in Me → Quick replies.
- The keyboard also learns the words, word pairs and phrases you type, along with any quick-reply keys you edited, so it can suggest them next time. That learning data lives in the same private on-device container and is never uploaded or synced. If you want to bring it to a new phone, you can export it yourself from Me → Keyboard habits; the file leaves your device only when you choose to export or share it, and you can clear it at any time from the same screen.
2. Information sent to our server
- When you tap AI reply or analyze a screenshot, the message text you want a reply to is sent over HTTPS to our proxy server at
smartkey-api.pages.dev. The proxy adds our AI provider credentials and forwards the text to a third-party AI model provider, which generates the suggestions. We may change the AI provider we use as the service evolves — whichever provider we use, it is a reputable large-language-model service and it only handles the text you asked us to work on (and, on Android, the screenshot you asked us to read). When you analyze a screenshot on iOS, only the text recognised from it on your device is sent. On Android, the downscaled screenshot itself is sent so the AI can read it, because the Android keyboard has no on-device text recognition.
- We do not log or store the content of these requests. The proxy is stateless: the text (and, on Android, the screenshot) exists only long enough to be forwarded and answered.
- We do not send your name, email address, Apple ID or any device identifier along with these requests.
- Our AI provider's handling of that content is governed by its own privacy policy, and it may retain it for a limited period as described there. We do not name the specific provider on this page because we may switch providers to improve speed or quality — ask us by email and we will tell you which provider is currently in use. Please do not send information you are not comfortable sharing with a third-party AI provider.
3. Information we do not collect
- We do not keep a history of what you type or copy.
- We do not use advertising identifiers, analytics SDKs or any tracking technology.
- We do not sell or rent your personal information.
4. Purchases
- Subscriptions are sold and billed by Apple through your Apple ID. We never see or store your payment details.
- Your subscription status is verified on your device using Apple's StoreKit. No purchase receipt is sent to our servers.
5. Keyboard "Full Access"
iOS requires "Allow Full Access" before a keyboard is permitted to make network requests. SmartReply uses that permission only to send the AI requests described in section 2. It is not used to read data from other apps or to build a profile of what you type.
6. Retention and deletion
- Because we do not store your text, there is nothing for us to delete on the server side.
- All app data lives on your device. Deleting SmartReply removes it, including your settings, your daily usage counters, and the quick-reply history.
7. Children
SmartReply is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
8. Security
All communication between the app and our server uses HTTPS/TLS. Our AI provider credentials are held on the server and are never included in the app.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time; the "Last updated" date above will change accordingly. Material changes will be reflected in the app or on this page.
